Cup drivers seek change to Texas but worry about Atlanta copies

FORT WORTH, Texas – Some Trophy drivers are concerned that a remodeled Texas Motor Speedway could create races similar to Atlanta, adding another type of high-speed racing to the NASCAR calendar.

While Texas officials have not publicly announced any plans to make changes, some contenders feel that Sunday’s race (3:30 p.m. ET on the USA Network) may be the last event in the current planning for this track.

With the All-Star Race moving from Texas to North Wilkesboro next yearTexas Motor Speedway’s only trophy race will take place on September 24, 2023. This can save time for any adjustments. Work to transform Atlanta began in July 2021 and was completed by December 2021.

Cup Champion Kyle Larson He said the business needs to be done at Texas Motor Speedway.

“I would like them to tear down this place first and then start over,” Larson said on Saturday. “First of all, they did a really bad job with the reconfiguration and initial reconfiguration.

“I’d like to see them change it from a mile and a half to something shorter. I don’t know if that means bringing a back workout.

“If I could build a track, it would probably be three-quarters of a mile from Bristol basically, a pier and progressive banking. But I don’t know if that’s possible here. I’m not sure what they have in mind, but anything would be better than what they did.” “.

Former Cup Champion Joey Logano Concerns about another high-speed race with events like this in Daytona, Talladega and now Atlanta.

“Do we need more super speeds?” Lugano asked Saturday. “Is this the kind of racing enthusiasts that they want to see? Because when you look at the way people have finished up front at these breakneck speeds lately, (they) are the ones riding in the back.

“Do you believe you should be rewarded for not working? Because that’s what they do. They ride in the back and don’t work, they don’t go there to put in a good race. They ride behind and take advantage of the misfortune of others in the race up front to try to win. I don’t think it Right. This isn’t a race. I can’t stand that.”

Lugano said he wanted to have more control over how he finished, especially in the knockout race.

“I want to be on the tracks where I can make a difference, where my team can make a difference, and we’re not at the mercy of the wreckage that happened in front of us and we can do nothing about it,” he said.

Discussions about changing lanes follow complaints about how difficult it is to pass on this 1.5-mile highway.

“Once you get to the top, it’s as if the bottom (the trail) is very, very weak,” Daniel Suarez He said.

Suarez has mixed feelings about the idea of turning Texas into another Atlanta-style race.

“Atlanta was a very good racetrack, and after that they turned it into a high-speed track and it was a lot of fun,” Suarez said. “I see it as a hybrid. I don’t think we need another racetrack like that, but that’s not my decision. Whatever they throw at us, I’ll try to be my best.”

Suarez hopes Texas will be what it once was.

“Maybe with some work, we can get this racetrack to what it was before, a very wide racetrack, run at the bottom, run in the middle, run to the top,” he said.

“As a race car driver, that’s what you want. You want that ability to run and show your skills. At breakneck speeds…everyone crashes, everybody pushes, and you can’t show your skills as much.”

Chase Brisco He would be fine with the change to Texas, but he wants it to be more like a track other than Atlanta.

“If we were to really change and start completely from scratch, I would love another Homestead racetrack,” Briscoe said. “The problem is that any time you build a new racetrack, it’s not going to be simple and worn out for a while. She’s trying to figure out what works best to get the most out of those first few years until she finally becomes good.

“I think Homestead is a great model, if we’re going to build another mile and a half. I think we’re going to have to look at what they have, progressive banking, and the shape of the racetrack is different. I think it’s a really good racetrack, and I think it always makes really good races. Any Something we can do to try to emulate it, it would be my vote.”

Denny Hamlin I just hope some kind of change is made in Texas.

“I’d rather have an Atlanta other than this one, honestly,” Hamlin said. “Anything would be better than the kind we have here.”
