Vierling’s RBI single raises the Phillies to 10th place, overtaking the Blue Jays

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Ferrling hit five hits, including a 10th-place RBI match-winning song, to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 4-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday night.

JT Realmuto came in as Philadelphia snapped a five-game losing streak to stay 2 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee for the last-place NL wild card.

“Things didn’t get any better than that,” Ferling said. “Definitely need it. We were grinding all night.”

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a three-stroke race for the Blue Jays, who top the AL Wild Card standings.

Bryson Stott took 10th place with a skill of sacrifice, moving contestant Jairo Muñoz to third. Adam Semper (10-6) then hit Jan Segura before walking down Dalton Guthrie in four pitches to load the bases.

Vierling hit the chopper 1-1 down the middle past the five Blue Jays on the field, then raised his right fist high into the air as he ran into pole position before his teammates attacked him between first and second. The celebration became so boisterous that one of his teammates tore Vierling’s shirt off his body.
